Resident at Dai Bosatsu Zendo
May 2003 - August 2003
I participated in a work exchange program at Dai Bosatsu Zendo in the Catskill Mountains from May through August of 2003.
In the spring and fall of each year, the monastery conducts a three-month training period called kessei. This tradition dates back to the time of Shakyamuni Buddha. The training utilizes the discipline of structured daily zazen (meditation), chanting services, work practice, and formal meals, with the support and guidance of fellow students and the Abbot. The monastery holds three seven-day sesshins during each kessei training period. Work practice ranges from splitting wood and landscaping to serving guests and zendo (meditation hall) cleaning. Students have private rooms and there is one rest day each week for personal study.
